Play to Your Strengths: 4 Ways Games Can Train You to Become a Better Manager

Want to become a better leader and manager? Maybe sometimes your mom or your dad said "Do not like play games, because it can make you lazy, or grades in school decreased". But, behind negative play the game continues, there is the positive side if you love to play games. Games now have the ability, through gameplay, to give us an insight into how the human mind works and train us in the skills necessary to flourish in today’s world Okay, in my blog, i will explain what is the positive side of playing game and the advantage in terms of skill unto yourselves that can be applied in daily life.

1. Empathy: It’s built into games
Being in high stress environments often takes its toll on you and the other members in your team. So how can you, as a leader, recognize the symptoms and mitigate them before it’s too late?
Chicago-based psychologist Dr. Kourosh Dini strongly believes that skill-based games like poker teach us empathy. He says, “One of the big things about many games is you’re interacting with other people in such a way that you have to actively think about what the other people are doing or thinking in order to either play against them or play them cooperatively. Either way you’ve got to be engaged in trying to think of how this person is learning and what’s this person is going to be doing next.”
2. Enhanced Decision Making Abilities
Most video games require players to follow rules, think tactically, make fast decisions and fulfill numerous objectives to win. Professor Arthur Kramer from University of Illinois discovered that games like these positively improved specific cognitive skills such as short-term memory in adults.
This makes Real-Time Strategy video games like “Starcraft II” particularly valuable to managers, who are constantly given short to mid-term goals and have to allocate resources efficiently to achieve them.
3. A New Way to Teach and Motivate
Oftentimes, managers are teachers too in the sense that they have to educate their subordinates to current processes, and also to push them to achieve beyond what they believe they are capable of.
“The learning processes behind play, I think, are undervalued,” says psychologist Dr. Kourosh Dini. “When a person is engaged in play, they seem to learn better … There’s this feeling of mastery that can happen that sometimes kids don’t get to achieve otherwise.”
Games could be the best type of learning material because they keep you at the edge of your abilities. At first everything begins at a very slow pace and it starts getting faster and harder the higher level you advance. So the better you are at some particular game the more demanding it becomes.
4. Going for the high score: Exceeding Expectations
Games immerse us into an alternate reality, and within these worlds, we embark on epic sized quests that seek to change the world. Doing these mind blowing things puts you into situations that you’ve never been to and forces your mind to think in a completely new and different way.
As people who are constantly called upon to deliver results, successful managers are the ones who constantly exceed the expectations that are put on them. In today’s wired world, what we do online can be mirrored into the real world. The way a manager deals with his or her projects can now be seen as a quest towards an epic win.
Game developer Will Wright once wrote, “…The gamers’ mindset—the fact that they are learning in a totally new way—means they’ll treat the world as a place for creation, not consumption. This is the true impact video games will have on our culture.”

BRINK : PC Games Information

Brink is an upcoming first-person shooter Video Game developed by Splash Damage, scheduled for release May 17, 2011 in the US and May 20 in Europe. It offers team-based multiplayer missions that are equally playable in offline single player mode, with authored narratives, persistent player characters and an approachable nature. It is also developer Splash Damage's first original title, as past titles were part of existing franchises.
In Brink, two factions, "Resistance" and "Security", fight in the previously utopian city known as The Ark, a floating city surrounded by the waters of a flooded Earth. The Ark was designed as a prototype of a perfect city, with renewable resources and no pollution, large enough to support 5,000 residents. However, due to many refugees entering the city from other parts of the world, its population has grown to over 50,000, meaning there are not enough resources to go around - resulting in the city being on the brink (hence the name of the game ) of a civil war.
Brink will feature Steamworks integration, including Valve Anti-Cheat. Its technology is id Tech 4 with a new rendering framework and improved support for multiple CPU cores.

GAMEPLAY

Brink is a first-person shooter with a focus on fluid, parkour style movement similar to that seen in games such as Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge and co-operative play. Online play is also a focus of the game , allowing up to eight players to play online. The game features both cooperative and team-based competitive options as well as the ability to play against bots.
For this movement Splash Damage has developed the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System. It allows players to maneuver around complex environments without equally complex input by analyzing their position and judging what they are trying to do.
Players can customize characters which are based on several archetypes and additional items can be bought with experience points earned by completing objectives. Unlike some similar games (the Call of Duty series for example) the same experience points can be earned in both single player and multi-player.
The player can choose to play one of four character classes, the soldier, the medic, the engineer and the operative. The Soldier class can resupply teammates and use high explosives to destroy key targets. The Engineer class enhances their teammates' weapons and can place stationary turrets. The Medic class is able to heal fallen teammates and increase their teammates' health. The Operative class can perform acts of sabotage, interrogate fallen opponents to provide intel on enemy locations and disguise themselves and operate as one of the enemy.
While in gameplay, both multiplayer and campaign, the player can bring up a "wheel" of sorts providing various objectives to fulfil. Each of these objectives give a specific amount of experience.
The Squad Commander system provides players with context-sensitive missions. The player's specific position on the map, his relative skill, current progress in the overall mission, and a wide variety of factors influence the available missions.

The Race for a New Game Machine: Creating the Chips Inside the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3

The Race for a New Game Machine: Creating the Chips Inside the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3
The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 game systems have changed the face of home entertainment. But few know the amazing story inside the consoles--how David Shippy and his team of top-notch engineers at the Sony/Toshiba/IBM Design Center (STI) forged the tiny miracle at the core of it all: a revolutionary microprocessor chip that set a new paradigm in personal computing. It's a thrilling, all-or-nothing race to deliver the industry's fastest chip in record time. At stake were the livelihoods--and sanity--of an unsung group of tireless visionaries. At war were the giants Microsoft and Sony.

The tough road to market started in 2001 when Shippy assembled the talent to design the chip for Sony's hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 game console, planned for a late 2005 release. In 2003, a gigantic wrench was thrown into the operation in the form of Microsoft--the software behemoth wanted the STI team's microprocessor for its own Xbox 360 and targeted Christmas, 2005, as well. As they desperately served two masters, balancing Microsoft's "victory or death" attitude and Sony's slow patience and caution, Shippy and his team endured 80-hour workweeks, flaring tempers, crumbled friendships, despair, and finally--triumph.

The Race For A New Game Machine is a dazzling, behind-the-scenes account of life in the tech world, featuring memorable characters, high-level corporate intrigue, and cutthroat business dealings. Driving the technical accomplishment was the bold vision that inspired the designers at STI, and throughout the book David Shippy and Mickie Phipps reveal the leadership lessons they drew from this experience, including team motivation, fostering innovation, and demanding hard work while encouraging fun.

    The Ultimate Technology Challenge

My team and I had worked tirelessly at IBM for two and a half years, breathing life into the Sony PlayStation 3 "Cell" central processing chip. We ordered our lives around the idea of beating Microsoft to market with a Christmas launch.

Now Chekib Akrout, IBM's senior vice president responsible for the PlayStation's chip team, told me another customer wanted our secret-weapon, record-smashing PowerPC microprocessor core. It was Microsoft.

"How did this happen?" I grumbled through gritted teeth.

"Let's just say it was a blockbuster, an offer IBM couldn't refuse," he answered. Over a billion dollars were involved, spanning the entire spectrum from development to chip manufacturing.

"There's more," Akrout said. "Microsoft wants something very similar to what you designed for Sony but with some unique enhancements, and they want it on the same schedule." He then described the design changes Microsoft needed for a super-aggressive, market-shaking Christmas launch.

Akrout didn't blink. It took me a second, but I got the message.

My goals were very clear when I joined IBM in the mid 1980s. I wanted cutting-edge microprocessor design projects that really pushed the state of the art. I wanted to lead design teams and leave my mark on the industry. This vision was the focal point of my whole career. Akrout handed me one of the top technology leadership positions in the entire industry and at that moment, I saw the top of the mountain, everything I wanted. Would I have to stake my claim by screwing Sony and extending Microsoft's dominance of digital life? Or could I help them both succeed?
